Game to Discuss?

This week, let's discuss Devil Daggers, the PEAK open world survival craft game, insofar as your open world is a bloody arena, average survival times are measured in seconds (.3% of people have made it to 500 seconds), and crafting is done by collecting mysterious red gems, which serve to enhance your combat abilities. It's really good, tbh. My elevator pitch: Ultrakill for cis people (men). Find the poll in the pinned comment.

This week, I've been playing the Witcher. S*x cards are peak gaming :marseycoomer2: tbh. Beyond that, the game's actually pretty good, interesting story and characters, though the combat is total dogshit. Probably the game most responsible for convincing people that Polacks can code, hence the bevy of garbage Playway SA "simulations" infecting steam. Beyond that, I've been playing Tactical Breach Wizards (which is very good), and some of Sins of a Solar Empire 2, which is lowkey disappointing.

:#taygrimacing:

Played it when it came out and it was just bad. I'm railroaded into being this inhuman gruff grey guy. You couldn't make me Jim Rockford, or James T. Kirk, or that chad from Dae Jang Geum. I have to be this dour grey bad specimen of what Poles are. And I'm supposed to direct this character to frick a bunch of chicks to get achievements. This caused major internal conflict because I am a completionist (I've done every planet on Mass Effect 1 ) but also I learned from the Sims a long time ago that getting your Sims character laid is most disappointing thing you can possibly do in your life. It's like on that South Park episode where they win Guitar Hero and it says "Wow! You're a strag!"

:#marseyitsallsowonderful:

I was gonna put that scene in Tombstone about "Stephen Fricking Foster" versus "Frederic Fricking Chopin" here but the powers that be apparently will not let you say "frick" in addition to ever showing a showing a nipple (people from the last generation are still bewildered by that one), or discuss the mechanical workings of some incredibly obscure French 7.5mm prototype rifle.

Still have another few days of it being on sale for me to decide. It's been so long ago I barely remember what the first one was like, but watching reviews on 2 it seems up my alley. Kinda weird they're selling a megabuck premium edition with no content for it yet, but I'm not considering that version anyway.

Finally got around to messing with retroachievements.org and goddarn is that fun! I've played like 40 different games in the last few days just testing it out, mostly Atari 2600, NES, and Genesis/Mega Drive. :marseyboomer:

Also been playing more Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown (my GOTY so far) and Huntdown, which is one of the best side scrollers ever. Great week for vidya at Gorillawitz HQ.

Yep, I owned E.T. too. Almost everyone who had an Atari did. Modern lore seems to repaint that game as such a bomb from the start that they had to bury all those unsold copies in a landfill, but it sold well at nearly 3 million. 8th best selling game ever on the platform. And while most people didn't like it, it wasn't considered some legendary awful game. Back when there were no rentals or used market, even if you didn't like it you played it 'cuz what else were you gonna do? Homework? :marseyno:

I went into it wanting to hate it because the devs went to the 'dex, the only place where unironic commies and unironic nazis meet, and they said stuff that discouraged me. Zoomers imagining that communism is relevant to them just to piss off their parents. (It is 100% this.)

And a lot of it is really bad. This is no Planescape: Torment, it's not even a KOTOR. But some parts are really good. Which parts worked for you? For me the phone calls with his ex-wife, I could feel what they're going for there. And the big plot twist at the end is brilliant.

But still the best thing out of Europe in all eternity, way beyond Michelangelo and Dante and Shakespeare and Chopin, remains the Vengaboys:

I thought the writing could be pretty funny at times and I liked the Eastern Europe inspired setting. I have a soft spot for any rpg that tries to create a gameplay loop besides combat and DE is interesting for going all in with the skill checks. Seeing if you can solve the ones you want is the game's challenge rather than fighting enemies.

The actual plot isn't super exciting and it's a little strange that you're trying to solve a mercenary's death but later on you get into a scripted shootout with more of those mercenaries. I get that it's my character's job but it felt farcical to jump through all these hoops in solving a man's death when you yourself become an enemy of his comrades and kill several of them. At the risk of a :soysnoo5: reference — Imagine a Star Wars game where you're investigating the murder of a stormtrooper :marseystarwars:, but then you go on to kill several of them yourself just like every other Star Wars protagonist, but then the game still expects you to go on solving the first trooper's murder. Sure it's your job, but when you've killed several of those guys yourself and the game portrays the murdered man's "faction" as antagonistic, it's hard to actually care. I kinda fell out of the game's story after the "Tribunal" but I kept playing because I liked the character interactions.

The characters are great and a lot of them blend humor and meaningful characterization. Harrier himself can be hilarious :marseyharrierdubois: and Kim is a great straight man :marseykimkitsuragi: As you pointed out though they have real backstories that affect them. Poor Harry can't be wacky all the time like your typical sarcastic Bethesda or BioWare protagonist because, at the end of the day, his antics are a coping mechanism to forget his past.

Side characters are great too because they're out there but oddly believable. The commie organizers trying to restart the revolution end up being easily distracted college students who wonder if hanging up posters for their group is too "bourgie" Measurehead is the biggest fascist in the game but he's also a black man a la someone off of /pol/ :marseychudnny: It's funny to meet these people and then have Kim remind you that, no, they're just random people and not actually relevant to your job of solving the case.

On that note, people always go on about DE being a very political game. Rightoids say it's a commie game. I've heard some leftoids say it made fun of them too much. Online discussion made me think these political themes were more relevant to the game than they actually are. It didn't really strike me as a wingcucked game.

Rather, DE does an interesting thing of keeping politics confined to the realm of characterization. Honestly I interpreted the game as having a recurring theme of how one should not want to be a wingcuck :marseyshrug:

The political "vision quests" demonstrate what I mean. At one point in the game you can choose to "lock in" being a fascist, communist, libertarian, or a centrist "moralist". Each ideology has its own quest, but these missions end up being largely meaningless. Communism just sends you to a book club obsessed with building a tower from one of their books out of matchboxes. Fascism has you stare into a mirror and pass an endurance check to see if you can make it as a hardline right-winger, but the only change from passing is that you just permanently scowl all the time. Being a laissez faire capitalist sends you on a quest to improve your net worth through speculative art, but of course it doesn't actually earn you a dime. Funnily enough only the neolib quest has a real ending — you get taken in by glowies for asking too many questions :marseyglow:

The theme I took from this all this was that, in the end, your political ideology is only relevant to your characterization and does not change anything about the world. In a standard power fantasy RPG like New Vegas, it would coincide with something like joining one of the major factions and deciding the future of the setting. In DE it's more meaningless. Your internal beliefs don't change the fact that you're just a police detective, nothing more, and the main plot will always and quite simply revolve around the case you were assigned, the job you were hired to do. How you feel about it politically is mostly irrelevant.

Your political alignment only changes the kinds of people you interact with. As a fascist you run into wackos going on about esoteric racial theories and semen retention. As a commie you meet workers who don't understand it very well but think it might benefit them and then college activists who do understand theory but end up being useless fiction obsessed stoners. As a libertarian you're stuck making sales pitches to oddball artists in the hopes of patronizing a great work of speculative art that will dazzle the rich and improve your net worth, never mind that you're not actually providing a meaningful good or service. The centrist quest is more weird but I suppose there's still a theme there — aligning yourself with the reigning neolib government just means they'll absorb you as another potential asset, your character no longer being able to make an individual difference, no longer in control of his actions. (Or maybe they just kidnap you idk)

There's a sobering lesson in all this. Being very political as a common man doesn't really change much of anything about the world. It only meaningfully changes how other people will see you and the kinds of people you'll be stuck hanging out with. Isn't that a thought that easily applies to real life? Anyway, I thought the game was about not being so wingcucked all the time :marseyantiwork2:

And on the note you made about Harry's ex-wife, I like how DE almost seems to mock the idea of your standard RPG protagonist who has no backstory and basically doesn't exist until the player starts the game. At the start of DE you have amnesia and your internal schizo monologue encourages you to make a new name and personality for yourself.

But as the game goes on you will run into hints about who you were and why Harry turned to severe drinking and drug use. Eventually the past fully catches up to you, the ex-wife plot thread in particular being hard hitting for your character. It's telling that you often take health or morale damage when you learn snippets of your forgotten past.

A lot of this is meaningless to the player because it's all just part of this fictional setting, but the point the game is making is that it's relevant to your player character. It's downright mocking the idea that your rpg protagonist didn't have a life before you hit the start button, and that nothing from their past would ever show up again.

"Realistically", says DE, your rpg hero did have a life of their own within the setting, and that past is going to catch up with him even if it means interrupting the main narrative.

Anyway, those are some thoughts that came to mind. Sorry for writing your ear off :marseylongpost2:

I think DE is a unique and memorable game and I appreciated it. My main criticism is that the murder mystery is a little whatever

I liked the Eastern Europe inspired setting.

Yeah, they used their Estonian roots well in imagining it. It's weird enough to be interesting but it's still relatable to our own lives.

I have a soft spot for any rpg that tries to create a gameplay loop besides combat and DE is interesting for going all in with the skill checks.

This. After all these years of g*mergate bullshit there's been all this controversy over whether it should be a guy or a girl who's going around blowing peoples' heads off. It doesn't seem to have occurred to most game devs that you could actually make a game that isn't about blowing peoples' heads off to begin with. I love combat as much as the next guy, but it really shows a lack of creativity when 99% of games are about it.

keeping politics confined to the realm of characterization.

I hadn't thought of it like that before, but yeah, this is spot on. You don't actually do very much politically. Politics just ends up being another way that your character's identity emerges as you play. And you could say that to some extent about the whole game, that it's really not about the big things going on in the plot. It's a very introspective story about finding out who you are, a bit like Planescape: Torment.

The political "vision quests" demonstrate what I mean.

I don't remember any of these. :marseyconfused: I only played it once a long time ago, so maybe I'm just forgetting. Or I suck at the game and never even started these quests. Or didn't they come out with an expanded version of it later? I don't think I played that.

DE almost seems to mock the idea of your standard RPG protagonist who has no backstory and basically doesn't exist until the player starts the game.

:marseyagree:

Some of the best RPGs have clever ways of playing with that, like Planescape: Torment. Or in KOTOR where it takes advantage of you assuming that you're just playing a dumb game about a generic hero.

Anyway, I don't have all that much to say because I agree with you about everything and my memory of it is starting to get fuzzy. I guess I'm about ready to play it again.

If you play anything like this and it's not Unreal World you are a certified zoomer f-slur.

Actually I'm just joking about this one. The UI was like 3 dimensions of autism beyond anything we would consider playable in the '90s. Just started playing Mount and Blade 2:Bannerlord earlier this week and don't really know wtf I'm doing, but I'm having fun. Bought a caravan, had my caravan ransacked, made my brother pilot a new caravan, bought a tannery, got taken hostage, escaped, started a siege on a castle, defended it from a larger enemy army, huge friendly army showed up, took the castle, Johnny-Come-Latelys stole all the booty.

Very fun so far. :#marseycrusader: :!#marseythumbsup:

You ever play the original Mountain Blade? I liked that but I heard bitching about Mountain Blade II not being better or something. Maybe they've fixed it now.

Also before that we had Sid Meier's Pirates in 1987 that really is basically the same game except with a different kind of tactical combat. :marseyboomer:

Jesus Fricking Christ. What are you doing with your life?

Seriouspost tho: Anyone who has any interest in games beyond just playing them should play everything that Sid Meier has ever done. Lots of different stuff in different genres because he invented most of the genres. He invented "tycoon".

Also Pirates is timeless. Lots of fun. It still 100% holds up today, and I come back to it regularly. They did a reboot in the 2000s that was actually 100% as good. Incels got butthurt because it included a dancing minigame. Umm... maybe try to get good strags? :marseysipping:

6ish hours in and I'm still not sure how I feel about all the changes they made. Definitely not a fan of the "lore" they decided to throw in as though I want a fricking backstory and tragic history for the doom guy and sentinel whatever the frick. First game handled that much better sequestered most of it to log entries and shit I never needed to think about other than the cool ghosts pointing you and conveying the idea of taking vengeance in their place without a single word of dialogue.

In my day the only lore or explanation for wtf is even supposed to be going on in Doom was in the readme file. :marseyboomer:

I actually find this offensive. In Doom (and Quake) there was a conscious decision made to not present any kind of story to the player in game. If you're going to make a Doom reboot, why in the heck would change this thing that made it fairly unique? If you want lore in your game, just don't call it Doom.

Mostly been playing Black Myth: Wukong until a fellow dramatard was kind enough to give me a Deadlock invite so now that's taken up a good chunk of my weekend.

The former is solid, although the invisible wall implementation gets annoying really quickly. So far, not as hard as I was expecting but I'm only on the final boss from chapter 2 so that could easily change. So far, the boss I've struggled the most with was the blue bobblehead baby at the beginning, died maybe 12-15 times.

Deadlock's been really fun so far, though as an alpha it's obviously lacking a lot of polish. The movement/shooting feels really good, especially for a MOBA crossbreed. I've only played 3 games against actual people and my performance ranged from shit to average so I clearly have a long way to go.

Call of Duty Advanced Warfare and Infinite Warfare campaigns. The last ghasp of the unapologetic action-thriller singleplayer experiences. Everyone talks like a 90s movie, you have Kevin Spacey and Jon Snow as the bad guys, it was brilliant. Only game that may be even better is Titanfall 2.

I miss those kind of Call of Dutys. I tried the new Modern Warfare ones, but immediatly lost interest when they talked about "terrorist XY" in "desert country ABC" having connections to "the Russians". Thats not Call of Duty, thats just the recent headlines

Played the shit out of extremely modded Dwarf Fortress (Steam version). It's incredibly buggy and there are a lot of things that don't follow the usual rules but the amount of content is a breath of fresh air; there's wizards that can shoot webs, druids that can turn into animals midfight, wendigos raiding your base at the start, never ending invasions/thieves/snatchers, and lots of different races. My fortress is (after 10 years) still a complete mess and there's no flux on my embark which only makes it more fun. I just quit because the third cavern layer contained thousands of animal people armed with steel weapons who took down every forbidden beast within seconds. Decent stuff.

I've watched the last two maps of the recent Valorant grand final and it was unironically great. I'm starting to believe that this is a seriously good game and much harder than CS2. These chinks were hitting shots that shouldn't be possible. Sometimes I wish I were born ten years earlier to experience prime MMOs although I'm starting to get the impression that these modern games are a lot better - or maybe the grass is just greener for you youngcels.

Jump in the discussion.

Valorant has very shitty movement 😒 That's why ScreaM is so successful, it's just a game about being the best at hitting one taps.

Also, MMOs, they more content and gameplay these days. People miss the people they played with more than anything.

What mods do you have on DF, b-word? Sounds like a fricking fun playthrough.

Unfortunately I think groomercord+phone games have basically killed MMOs. Not sure how old you are, but I thought peak MMO was fricking early WoW, not that I'd know. Modern games are fricking all slop, or at least anything high budget. AAA might as well have died in 2016 for my money. It's literally all cancer genres (BR or "extraction shooter" whatever that means) + endless mtx + fewer and less interesting mechanics.. Everything's so casual and/or cinematic now, just overall depressing.

My D:OS playthrough stalled thanks to work shit but I was struggling with it anyway. I'll pick it back up again but it's such a slog. The later Larian games have to be better... right?

I've been stuck on a lot of client calls lately where I just sit and babysit them so I've been playing Doom because it's kind of mindless. I just finished Back To Saturn X E1 (with Final Doomer and Voxel Doom), and it was mostly good. It's impressive that it can apparently run on the vanilla engine, the levels were mostly interesting, but it also had some tedious enemy encounters. By the tenth time I picked up a keycard in an empty room and 100 enemies (mostly revenants and mancubi, plus 3 arch viles) teleported in, I was kind of over it. Still, pretty solid.

After beating that, I decided to start Quake 2. I've never actually played more than the first few levels, I was a consolestrag when it came out so it wasn't really something I would have spent time with. Honestly, it might be something you had to be there for at the time because the levels and enemies all feel very boring now. I'll give it a bit more time but I remember this being the beginning of "id makes great engines but boring games". I beat Quake 1 for the first time a couple of years ago and wasn't impressed with it either. Idk. I think they might have peaked with Doom II.

The later Larian games have to be better... right?

Haven't played, just watched a friend stream it, but among RPG connoisseurs I've seen two opinions about Larian games: #1 They're okay. #2 Only a total fricking r-slur would ever like this. :marseyshrug:

If you're the kind of person who would play D:OS and you haven't played Age of Decadence and Colony Ship yet I would suggest those. Same kind of thing but 10 times more thought went into the story.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Colony Ship is on the backlog, I think Age of Decadence might be, too. Honestly, I'm powering through D:OS on the strength of its story, but I feel like it would have been better as a fantasy novel than a game. I worked at an RPG-focused studio for a bit and everyone there loved D:OS2, so I'm hoping that means they fixed a lot of the problems with the first one.
