Game to Discuss?
The Witcher. A trvly classic game, which introduced the world to Geralt: the greatest kitty monster hunter the world has known. It's more or less what you'd expect from a polish fantasy game: you peepee down innumerable white slvts with your BBC, and also there's some shit about killing the various monsters (presumably standins for the more civilized races overrunning poland at this time) which have been eating people or whatever. The game is also known for its one of a kind combat style, where you press your m1 button at various times in order to kill the monsters. Unfortunately (for Geralt) s*x is somehow less engaging than this boring button mashing combat, though completing a s*x scene rewards you with a s*x card, a piece of commemorative art for horny polack teens to jerk off to. It's an acquired taste but I'd say it's the best one of the series because it had the best setting and atmosphere, and by this point I'm fine with admitting to myself that I'm not playing any of those games for the combat. 2 & 3 definitely had their own things they excelled at and I loved the story and branching paths that 2 had in particular, but 1 is special for me

Witcher 1 (7): Game you should play if you like RPGs. Skip otherwise.
Witcher 2 (9.5): Best of all, good antagonist, focused on the story with enough freedom to explore, great ending possible
Witcher 3 (8): Too much open world shit that distracts from the story, thus removing all sense of urgency from the story (while it tries to tell you it's super important to act fast!!!)

I've never seen anything like that before. Just the omnipresent compulsion to disregard everything else in life and keep making noises play and numbers go up. I had a great time but I feel horrible about it and the dev is some sort of terrorist for managing to do that. It's not even like super deep or anything???? Just bought Deadeye Deepfake Simulacrum after playing the shit out of the demo. The game is very well designed and addicting, it's probably the best hacking game since Uplink .
My only complaint would be that the earlygame is super hard and feels janky until you find a class/playstyle that works well. Also you shouldn't bother with paying off your debt on the first playthrough.

I finally got into Crusader Kings 2, my first plunge into paradox titles (after getting intrigued by jinxthinker streams
@Dramamine). I have to say it's very fun. In the end it boils down to a spreadsheet simulator but if you are able to RP a bit that's not a bad thing.
The world is very big, but you can just zoom in on a specific region and do your thing there. Like choosing a specific nobleman to bully and exterminate his line.
The game achieved to really boost my interest in history, especially to doublecheck which events really happened and where the devs took some artistic liberties. It really managed to drive home how horrible the plague was, with you just sitting on your throne and your heirs dropping like flies and your treasury shrinking due to collapsing tax base. I also didn't know about the colossal failure that is called the 4th crusade (chuds don't look that up if you don't know about that yet. grim stuff)
One thing I found funny is how you can convert culture and religion of a province in a relatively short timeframe. There is no indication about this in the game but I'm pretty sure you can only do this via genocide. This is definitely next on my list on things to learn about.

I'm a 40k nerdoid, so I really enjoyed all the massive set pieces in the campaign. I found the combat really fun to play once I gave up on using a controller and went back to kb+m. Over-the-top gore and violence is always a plus

I hated The Witcher. Still ended up playing it for like 20 hours hoping I'd start to like it. It had a few nice unique little polak touches to it but it was still essentially generic fantasy about elves and fairies and gay shit like that. It didn't have nearly the same creativity in pushing the fantasy RPG genre as Darklands (yeah, I had to mention it
) or the Slavic flavor of Thea. It forced me to play as a predetermined character. I can live with that, except it made me be a really terrible character. He's a gruff, dour morally grey uggo who bangs every slut he can get his hands on. It's what a 13-year old who listens to heavy metal imagines masculinity is.
I'm not above being stupid and juvenile, but the s*x card thing just made me feel intense cringe. It's like I've always said: The least fulfilling experience in life is getting laid in The Sims. It's even worse in this game because it's this grey dude who doesn't even have any game.
As for the plot, I remember absolutely nothing at all. That's how forgettable it is. I remember you go to a village and you ask people questions about a mystery or something. That's all I've got. I don't remember the gameplay mechanics except I didn't like them and got bored.

You want dark fantasy, you play Darklands. (I'm not even saying that just because I'm doing the LP, I constantly bring up Darklands to the point where it annoys people.) Your Witcher game is "dark" because it has some grey colors in it. This was a joke already in the early 1990s:

In Darklands there's stuff like if you get beaten by wolves they eat one of your party. The rest of the party just has to watch as they get eaten. Or demons take one of them to heck. Not your family friendly Hallmark Christmas romance movie version of heck, actual Dante heck.
I guess this is a thing where I've never gotten what people who are into horror get out of it. Maybe because I'm constantly running on extreme levels of anxiety. If a monster is chasing you, that doesn't scare me. That's an engineering problem. We need to find out how to separate ourselves from him. If you can't do that, it's a combat problem. Shoot him. If he's "bulletproof", let's see if he's proof against .50 cal. These are quantitative problems. They're within your understanding. You just need to do more of something and then you win. I've been in this kind of problem irl and it made me a little scared but mostly just pissed off.
What scares me is Twilight Zone type shit. Your space capsule lands and you find out that you don't exist. You get off on the wrong floor of an elevator and find out that you aren't a real person. That's what keeps me up at night. A monster, maybe it's hopeless but I can die fighting against it. But finding out that your entire concept of reality was always wrong, you can't beat that by leveling up.
