I've been playing Age of Mythology Retold. I guess this can be a mini review.

It's a pretty solid remake, although clearly done on a shoestring budget given how cheap a lot of the 2D art and menus feel. It also continues the strange trend with more modern 'Age of' titles in being completely bloodless, which in conjunction with the conspicuous redesign of a couple of units is almost certainly done to peepeeride the Chinese market.

It actually makes readability of fights an issue: since there's no blood and no corpses left behind after a battle, in large fights it can be quite difficult to tell what's going on until the fight is over, to the point where I've had battles I thought I was losing where I came out with only minor losses. Compare this to something like Starcraft 2 - for example, you can tell your marines/zerglings/zealots/etc are getting hosed because not only do they explode in a torrent of blood but they make distinctive noises when they die.

Not that big battles are particularly common due to how the population cap works. Unlike Age of Empires 2 where 1 unit = 1 pop no matter if it's a spearman or a trebuchet, each unit has a different population size, with only villagers using 1 pop. Combine this with a basic cap of 200 and larger units taking up to 5 pop and you never really find yourself commanding large armies. This is just how AoM works rather than anything unique to the remake, but it would have been nice if they had just significantly upped the pop cap as was done in AoE2 DE.

I've also encountered a few pathing issues and instances of units getting stuck on props, but hopefully this is something that can be ironed out after a few patches. On the plus side, units are now much better at moving past each other, which was a major problem I had with the original.

Visually the game is obviously a big upgrade from the fugly early 2000s 3D models of the original, while very much capturing the visual style of the earlier game. I feel they could have done more with lighting however, since things like torches, fires etc don't work as a light source as you'd expect they would, which is an odd oversight.

But other than these nitpicks, it's still a fun game with a ridiculously long and varied campaign and a number of key refinements over the original version.

I've also been playing RimWorld and Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion. Not much to say other than that they're rad. I'd be really interested to hear the opinions of anybody who has played Sins of a Solar Empire 2.

Hollow knight was aight. I don't think it's as good as everyone makes it out to be, I've played way better metroidvania examples but it's still fine.

I like how the nail upgrades are technically meaningless though lol, funny game design there cuz if you upgrade the nail it makes bosses etc scale up to the point of the upgrade not really doing anything

Finished Quake 2. I stand by my early assessment, it got better as I got access to the better weapons but never really got good. Too slow, too many boring enemy encounters. It's been interesting to revisit but there are a thousand better boomer shooters that improved on its ideas. I'm probably going to pass on the expansions, not sure what I'll play next.

I really like Hollow Knight, I think it's probably the best platformer I ever played. I also like the incorporation of the souls-like respawn

Also fun busy work curtesy of @KoreanDramaKing got that oiled butt 2 more to go. But that's all right brain gaming, I've mainly been marinating on that leftist shit. I bought a piece of shit money laundering scheme for $27 last year and now it's just a regular shitty gay candy game, and I've dug into a solid hour of cutscene and menu hopping in that shit,

World of Warcraft The War Within.

I'm old and a sucker for a new WoW expack. It's pretty good much more alt friendly. Writing is still awful but black one armed warrior lady isn't quite as bad as a wheelchair dragon.

This week I've been playing minecraft mostly, now with decorative tuff and copper, though you can't do too much with em. What a timesink it is. Spent a lot of time trying to assemble a new PC, but I think I bent a CPU pin, so that went nowhere. Otherwise, I played a lil more of the Witcher, and Hollow Knight.

Went back to genshin, got lucky, and got suckered into staying for a bit more. Though I blame doom eternals dlc for this, ancient gods part 1 final boss is one the most horrendously designed boss of all time. Made me ragequit and I wasn't even playing on nightmare I was getting my butt beat on ultra violence. It makes me even more annoyed given how good the rest of the dlc was.
