Game to Discuss?

Supreme Commander is this weeks game. For those unfamiliar with the game, it's an interesting RTS, with more thought put into it than most. The physics are detailed, small rises in the terrain can stop shots, and some lategame units can crush others underfoot. Honestly a lot of fun, vote below in the pinned comment.

Supreme Commander is a great game, but it is most notable as a spiritual successor to Total Annihilation, the best RTS ever made. For unknown reasons it is completely unheard of in the modern RTS community, but the tiny chunk of RTS games that descend from it are superior to the entire rest of the genre. The original Total Annihilation still holds up, but there are also quite a few open source free clones of the game built by God's strongest neurodivergents. In the paid game family tree, there's Supcom and Planetary Annihilation. Supcom's contribution to the genre was Experimental units, there was an experimental unit in TA but only one faction had it and it was ridiculously unplayable expensive and kinda dogshit blah blah blah, not much like the ones that would later typify future games in the subgenre. Almost all of the TA FOSS forks have experimentals these days. Planetary Annihilation is a much newer spinoff of the series, a spiritual successor to a spiritual successor. It only has one faction instead of the two from TA or the three from SupCom, but is set in SPACE, with maps containing multiple planets that can be fought over, flown between, and blown up. Very fun game.

Good post. I haven't played TA myself, unfortunately. I don't like PA honestly, the artstyle+identical units really put me off of it.

PA is definitely my least favorite of the three, but the space gimmick is well executed, and slamming two planets into each other to win a game is awesome enough that I think it has something to offer. Do agree on the identical units thing though, I'm a faction bloat enjoyer, ejaculated when I saw Supcom's three, and would gladly play an RTS with any arbitrarily large number of factions.

I think a lot of old RTS games are fairly inacessible to newer fans.

I don't remember TA having a tutorial, and to this day I don't know which units are good against which, I think you have to read the manual to know that (or deduce from unit name, but that's not always possible).

Although it's still more friendly than something like RA1 where it instantly drops you into a mission with minimum context, and where you don't even have the ability to queue units.

yeah, I spent a lot of time reading the manual as a kid and throwing units at each other to see what would happen. Another part of the problem is that RTS games are extremely niche, and there aren't many new players in the genre in general, let alone for a thirty year old game that never went as mainstream as other offerings in the genre

RTS games are a lot less niche than you make them out to be. Quite frankly, it's hard to regard any genre which can achieve top 25 concurrent players on steam, and attract a million dollar prize pool as truly "niche", certainly not "extremely niche"
