Game to Discuss?
Broforce! A tribute to 80s action movies, it's a cut above the average pixelslop, with a worryingly destructible world, and a giant cast of characters. The story, inasmuch as there is one, is a bog standard "america bad" parody. Even though you might be in a jungle, the enemies are still terrorists who hate our freedoms. Despite this, it's in no way "woke," the love for the source material is clear, and the terrorists make for uncomplicated bad guys who you have to kill, with no whinging about their humanity. I really enjoyed playing this one with my friend when it came out. The destructible levels can get really crazy if you get a chain reaction of exploding stuff going, plus you can do stuff like tunnel your way through the levels like you're playing Worms or something.
There's a free spinoff of the game that was released to advertise The Expendables. Probably better than that crummy movie was.

Love this one. It's like video games felt when you were 8, just blowing shit up with all sorts of cartoon weapons. Wouldn't have been half as good if the levels weren't destructible, that really adds a lot of different ways to get through the levels.

Finished Shadwen - a stealth game which was ok but mediocre - had a mechanic which time paused whenever the character stopped moving at all, thus allowing some strategic planning when trying to move away from enemies through stealth
Started Star Wars - Empire at War. It's an RTS from 2006, which is.......18 years ago? Good grief it has mode to play on planets, as well as fighting with fleets of space ships in outer space which is pretty neat.

I wasn't good enough at RTS's (especially as a kid) to get very far, but I really liked setting up a big space battle and watching the fireworks. I wish they'd made one set in the prequels, I think large scale ground battles with tanks and shit fit better there. I feel like an OT-inspired RTS would be more about small unit tactics.

Yeah dude, an actual health bar and med packs you have to find.
I'd say 2 is harder once you crank it up. That one scene in the town square with the two tanks blowing shit up and you have to stickybomb them, fml
Jump in the discussion.

I think on veteran the health packs don't even appear anymore.
I think the worst 2 mission was The Silo because you have to clear houses which on veteran makes you feel like you're in an actual meat grinder. Then you have to snipe mortar teams and it's possible for the level to checkpoint after a mortar has already been fired, trapping you in a death cycle and forcing you to restart the entire level.

I've mostly been playing old shit this week, Saturn, arcade, some SNES and NES and Genesis, with the new 8bitDo M30 I just got on BIPOC Friday sale for $23.

Very highly rated and it is a kick butt controller. Killer D-pad, really responsive and wide enough your thumb doesn't slip off. Perfect for everything pre-analog stick or modern games that don't need them. My only complaint is it's small, but it's a world of tiny handed manlets out there, what are you gonna do.

Seriously. I plan on looking around and see if there's something like a "case" for it, kind of like a rubber phone case that would make it larger in the hands on Etsy or RedBubble or whatever those "I have a 3D printer so I'm a business now!" sites are.

Played Marathon, currently halfway through Marathon 2.
Marathon does a bunch of weird shit. There's no jumping, but you can just run across small gaps, and you move in whatever direction you're currently facing while in the air so you can do this
You can grenade jump, and the game often requires you to do this for secrets and sometimes for necessary progression. This is really fricking awkward to do since you do it with a grenade launcher that detonates on impact but you can only aim down by about 45 degrees at most. It wasn't until I started playing 2 that I figured out how to do it properly: sprint diagonally then do a little twist to shoot behind yourself and redirect your momentum in midair. It also hurts yourself a shitload to do it, and I think the self-damage is determined by difficulty. A single grenade does over half your health on hard in M2. You can also rocket jump but you need a triple overshield in order to survive that.
The game fricking loves switches, and its unclear what most of them do. Some of them just operate the lights, sometimes they open doors in different parts of the level, some of them seem to do nothing at all. You can also operate switches by shooting them with the grenade launcher, but of course this is never told to you but is necessary to progress a few times. There is an infamous level "Colony ship for sale, cheap" which involves a puzzle where you have to raise 6 platforms to specific heights to use them as a set of stairs. Which is hard to do since you can only "climb" onto platforms that are a tiny bit higher than you. So they need to be arranged very specifically, which wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the fact that the switches are spread across 3 separate rooms that are literally spaced out across the entire map so depending on which platforms you frick up you may have to run back through the entire map. Oh and along the way there's a timed door that needs to be operated by shooting a switch with a grenade (this is literally the only door in the whole fricking game like this). My problem with the level wasn't actually getting the positioning of the platforms right, I managed to get it right the first time, my problem was figuring out how to set their height in the first place. They're controlled by switches which seem to just make the platforms go up and down. What I didn't realise was that if you hit the switch again while the platform is moving it stops in place. I think this is only used in one other place in the game and you don't even need to figure out how the switches work to progress in that case. So I spent probably 15-20 minutes just running back and forth through the level trying to figure out what to do and also trying to figure out how to access the room that contains a bunch of ammo and a rocket launcher and flamethrower (it is literally inaccessible and is there to troll you lmao frick you cute twink.)
The story is good, but it's told entirely through text terminals, some of which are pretty important but are hidden behind secrets, the most insane of which involves shooting a switch high up on a wall (while standing in lava) to raise a platform to access a room, then rocket jumping to reach a terminal which you have to activate while in midair.
Also there are several levels with friendly npcs but since the game is 99% narrow hallways they are constantly getting in your way and stopping you from moving to the point that I just started fricking killing them when they got in my way.
Do not play Marathon, just read the terminals online and watch mandalore's videos on it.

I finished Black Ops 6's campaign and I appreciate the effort Treyarch put into it. MW3 (2) was a low point for the series since the campaign was literally reused Warzone maps, so I'm glad Treyarch's bringing it back.
Idk why people say COD campaigns are afterthoughts because outside of last year that's never been true. If anything COD or at least Treyarch is still keeping it alive when every other shooter is moving towards multiplayer only. COD campaigns are like comfy time capsules of a bygone era.
I appreciate that Treyarch is still continuing the storyline that began way back in World at War even though that was before most Alphags were even playing.

I've been playing Saints Row The Third this week.
Not only is it a really fun GTA clone, but it's something of a time capsule due to how unabashedly vulgar and low brow it is, released just a few years before it became a widespread competitive sport to be offended and touchy about everything. It's also quite short; looking at my previous saves, you can pretty much 100% the game in around 30 hours.
Other than that, I've been playing Drox Operative 2. There's not much to say other than it's a pretty old school ARPG in spaaaaaace. It's basically just an updated version of the first Drox Operative but overall I think the refinements make it better in most respects to the first game.
As an aside, it's been a pretty boring year of releases. Other than Age of Mythology remake, the only 2024 game I've played is Dragon's Dogma 2 and that was a total wet fart.

The Oriental stereotypes, the missions where you sprayed poo at people and tried to keep yourself safe, the dildo bat... I thought that Gaming was just going to get better and better

Most of that was SR2
SR3 is still a good game but it's not SR2

It was good that Saints Row leaned into the more absurd stuff, the first game was pretty mid and I think the series would be largely forgotten if the sequels were more of the same.

I read elsewhere that you've not been having a good time with that. That game was wack - it ran and looked like shit until I installed the E3 mod, but then I was playing on a GTX 760 at the time...
Despite that, I still had a pretty good time with it, although I much preferred the sequel.

Been playing Oxygen not Included during the weekend (it was free)
It's fun until the ai gets tangled on itself and gets stuck in its endless routines.
Also you have to build power line/air vents and that's just not fun...

sure. It tries to be both a cute and casualized rimworld, while also being a more neurodivergent rimworld. These are at cross purposes, and neither is especially thought out.

Finished Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. Liked it, but I am always ready to be done with a 100-hour JRPG by the end. Ichiban and company sure are likeable, though.
Started Armored Core 6 right after. Never played a mech game before, so got my butt kicked a good half dozen times by the boss in the first mission, but I think I am getting the hang of it.

The tutorial won't tell you this but if you tap the dodge button while holding move forward during the overboost you cancel the boost without killing your momentum the way the tutorial's boost cancel does.

I still haven't gotten the overboost down. It's mapped to L3, which I am used to just being the "dash" button in other games, so I constantly accidentally activate it and flail around like an r-slur trying to get out of it. I just hit the boss at the end of chapter 1, and can already tell I am going to need to respec. Been using a super light, duel machine guns build until now.

What a fricking stupid repair system this mod has. You need high quality parts compatible with your gun, repair kit compatible with your gun, and a technician lvl 1 which requires an item that's random loot.

Playing darksiders 1, it's okay. Also playing blood omen legacy of kain and holy frick this control scheme and loading screens everytime I fricking pause is bullshit but still interesting enough for me to press on.
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
man blood omen is very much a product of its time, i tried to play through twice and made it to like the second boss because every single fricking thing in that game has a 3 second loading screen. Soul Reaver fixed a lot of stuff from blood omen, but it also has too much focus on long boring puzzles and not enough cool vampire stuff, so either option ends up being kinda cursed.

I'm trying to finish the Completionist ++ achievement on Balatro and I can't find the Stone Joker for the life of me. It's my only joker left and I've probably won ~10 runs in a row where I used a Tower tarot card early and it just won't appear
Once I finish that I'll either go back to play more FTL Multiverse or maybe I'll try that TCG store sim. Hopefully the Steam Fall Sale will be good and I can buy some interesting games (it won't be and whatever I buy will just sit in my library)
