Game to Discuss?

Today we are discussing NetHack. One of the sucessors to the genre-naming Rogue, whence the term roguelike comes, though Nethack is the closest thing to a genre definer (admittedly, the average game called a roguelike is at this point something of an entirely different species). It's still worth playing today, I think. The complete lack of metaprogression means that the game is a pure test of skill - nothing is gained by playing the game except knowledge. Vote below, in the pinned comment.

After discovering nethack about 15 years ago as a high schooler and playing off and on since then, I finally beat it for the first time about a month ago. (Dwarf Valkyrie ofc). It's crazy how much easier it feels as an adult

The more I think about this the more I come to the conclusion that it's an 8. There's just way too much random shit in this for no reason other than to ruin your run. Also one of those games that keep getting bloated content for absolutely no reason. Still top tier but sometimes less is more.

Jump in the discussion.

IDK whether it's an 8 or not, I tend to go off of vibes when grading games. Definitely agree that it's got too much going on, though.

I remember finding Angband on one of those "1000+ games" CD-ROM's that were loaded up a bunch of freeware and shareware titles from the DOS and early win9x era, that was my first experience with a roguelike.

I never liked Nethack compared to the others like Angband, ADOM, Crawl. I just remember it having a bunch of instakill threats that you have to expeience the first time aone by one and then learn to prepare for it in subsequent runs. Is that fair/accurate?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Kind of. You also can't really prepare for everything and can definitely get a run ended by bad RNG.

Insomniac's Spider-Man 2. It's a pretty funny game. Moments that made me laugh out loud:

  • Spideman complains about there being a gun club in NYC

  • Homecoming proposal for a gay Black and Indian couple

  • Do some stupid side mission about GMOs and Spiderman says verbatim, "Profit shouldn't be part of the equation when it comes to basic human necessities."

  • Side mission where you play as a deaf black girl spray painting buildings

  • BIPOC gets said several times in another mission (apparently it's pronounced bye-pock?)

I haven't played video games in ages so I never comment but I'm actually on a Pokémon kick. Been playing Brilliant Diamond and I love it even though it seems to be the worst Pokemon release according to popular consensus.

I also got Lets Go Eevee because I've never played a Kanto game and it looks gorgeous from what I've seen.

Think I'm going to be a Switch Soyboy now, I just love vibey baby games like Pokemon, Kirby and LEGO Star Wars lol.

Legend Arceus is the only good pokemon game on switch.

Pokemon Platinum is a great pokemon game, but the original Diamond and Pearl weren't, which makes me so mad they remade those instead

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

I'll probably give Arceus a shot too. If only because I want a darn Shaymin :marseyshayminpat:

IDK tho I haven't played a conventional Pokemon game since like Moon (awesome) released or something so it was nice to see all of the improvements over time.

{Current gen} is always the worst pokemon ever made, whereas the best is {gen I grew up with}.

Pokemon g*mers are giga r-slurs which is not surprising since they participate in online communities about games for literal toddlers.

I like gen 3 exclusively for the Reggie puzzle and was sad to find out that none of the other games have anything like that and it was changed in the remake.

Dont listen to pokemon neurodivergents like me and just have fun. I do reccomend the older titles heavily but if you dont wanna emulate the switch ones are serviceable. Ill also recommend legends arceus as the best switch mainline pokemon entry but ironically you might end up not liking it because it changes the core pokemon formula more than any game in the series

I mean I did play the old games as a kid, Emerald and platinum are kino, if lacking a lot of creature comforts (HMs, box management, shiny odds). I like playing on my OLED TV and the switch OLED screen is also brilliant (lol) which certainly helps.

I think I was lead a bit astray by my friend telling me not to bother with the switch games because they were "too easy", but I literally just want to vibe and do some Pokédex and shining hunting. I completely agree with the critiques in this video with all that said

To be honest the main thing that made me stop playing the modern games is the sheer amount of hand-holding. You can't walk 10 feet without being forced to talk to someone or do something.

I can forgive the gimmick features, but let me do what I want.

In recent weeks:

  • Shadows of Doubt. Immersive sim detective/hired thug game. They made a sweet procgen city block for you to immersive sim in but it feels like they didn't really finish it from Early Access. Big problem is bugs/jank, with the detective nature of the game I have a nagging doubt the whole time if I need to look/think harder or if something got bugged. Second problem is the procgen missions are pretty thin and formulaic. They also lean too hard on the detective stuff, you'll get missions like "This butthole pissed me off too much, trash their apartment. They have type O- blood and their spouse is a chef, find them that way." The smaller voxel style they used is great for the city and props, but horrible for the characters - I don't like it when the detective work requires looking at them a lot. I'm a try to finish out a run if another murder happens soon, another thing making me wonder if it's a bug or not right now.

  • Quasimorph. A real traditional roguelike, down to searching the levels for the stairs (elevator here) down. They put the current "metaprogression" definition of roguelike around it. You are a PMC sending solo cloned mercenaries from your spaceship, and as you get the right items you can upgrade the spaceship to produce better clones, more and better equipment, etc. The "quasimorphs" are demons that bust out of enemies when they die, and I think I learned entirely wrong habits of play by staying too long in the noob area that's quasimorph free.

  • Dragon Age: Origins. Everyone was talking about shit Dragon Age so I thought I would go back to the one considered good, especially as when it was current I started it twice but twice got pulled away before leaving the first town. This time I got to Orzammar so far and we'll see if I can slog through the rest of that.

  • Project Zomboid. Continued playing this, I have actually managed to live and set up a base this time. 2 months+. Training up my mechanic skill so I can fix my car good and try to make it to Louisville.

So it does have "Non-Binary" as an option for players and NPCs. And if I went to find someone I would commit features to memory like "looking for a 38 y/o short bald man." When someone's ID said non-binary I found myself automatically thinking "looking for a fat blonde non-binary woman" or "tall glasses-wearing non-binary man" based on appearance. Because non-binary isn't real.

All the "yellow paint discourse" strags are forgetting all the old games that literally just put arrows on the floor. Assault on the Control Room is just the same few copy-pasted rooms and bridges over and over, but the devs figured it a clever way to help you pointed in the right direction. :marseywholesome:

Played it with my brother, I loved the magic systems that required you to prepare stuff/spells before you could actually start stomping, and potions actually being almost necessary rather than an optional buff.

Didn't really care much for the story. Also the whole corruption mechanic thing almost ruined the game for us.

Anyway we kind of cheesed it when we figured out we could duplicate/upgrade items with the ancestor chest.

Rain of Reflections

Afaik the game is abandoned and will never be finished (only the 1st chapter released) which makes me kind of sad. The tactical combat is fine, the hacking systems are fun and the story also seems to be okay.

Downside is that it's really on rails. but whatever.

I'd like to be playing the Indiana Jones :marseytinfoil2: game right :marseymoreyouknow: now since it just released for non-paypigs an hour ago, but of course the launch :marseycruisemissile: is fricked. Was just sitting :marseylookingback: at a game loading :marseyspinner: splash screen :marseysurftheweb: for 20 mins even though nothing was actually :marseynerd3: happening :marseybongoukraine: on my end. Then I started fricking :marseytom: with things and made it worse. :marseyflamewar: So after a reboot I'm re-downloading all 113 gb including 4K textures. Maybe :marseymight: that'll do something. :idontknow:

I do like how positive :marseyfingergoodjob: the reception for it has been though, with thoughts ranging from "shocked me how good it is" on the low end to "best AAA game in maybe :marseymight: 10 years" on the high end, when everyone :marseynorm: was trying to mog it before :marseyskellington: it came out. Even notoriously cranky/picky people like Worth A Buy love it.

3 hours later :marseywave2: after fricking :marseytom: my Xbox/Gamepass app to heck and back I figured out a fix and have been playing Indy for 2 or so hours.

Yeah, it's excellent. A lot of sneaking around very ornate looking :marseybinos: locations, and the combat :marseyhwacha: moments feel really :marseythinkorino2: violent :marseyderanged: and weighty. Plays a lot like Thief :marseyrobber: and Dishonored. Very high quality :marseygraze: cutscenes too, and I usually hate those and skip 'em straight away but I'm compelled to watch :marseysalitsnowhere: these. Good shit.

I played a grotesque amount of poe2 over the weekend. It's quite good. I have concerns about item crafting but in general I've had a good time with it.

Reddit is having an absolute melty over it. They complain that it's too hard, and that the loot is bad. I suspect that they're all just r-slurs who are lost without being handheld by build guides. I'm playing a ignite based witch with shitty gear and all I've done on the skill tree is path to fire damage, spell damage, and similar nodes that will scale my ignite. I've been breezing through the game with very little difficulty and having fun, then winding down by taking in the absolute seethe the redditors are putting out. It's truly is the best of both worlds.

I really wish I had time to play this game :( I wasted so much time in POE before I got married and had a kid. Should I leave my family and reclaim my life of:

  • POE

  • Being a nasty slut

Depends on how good you were at poe. Would be worth if you were a mirrorchad but not if you were a brokie.

God of War Ragnarok on PC and while it continues Sony's perfect record of really optimizing their shit for PC the game is just...... Bad. Kratos is straggy and suddenly against fighting and starting wars with the god, the enemies so far are repeatative and boring many of them are bugs or rats. There's a lot of useless bug hunts and collectables. I just met and freed the Norse god of war Tyr expecting something big to happen but Tyr is also a big lame strag.

Thor and Oden the big bads came off more as mob boss like goons in the opening chapters that you meet them and I havent seen them since in over 10+ hours of playing.

Hopefully it gets better but it's not looking hopeful.

I've had free Gamepass for a while so I'm grinding out some of the games that interested me. I'm about to start Tunic and I might as well give that Indy game a romp since I won't be paying :marseydevil:

Of course did the customary hour of installing mods (went with purely QOL and visual ones don't yell at me). Seems pretty interesting but darn is it unforgiving if you don't save scum. Will try to pick it back up this week
