Game to Discuss?
Westerado: Doubled Barreled is this week's game. Originally a flash game, it fortunately escaped to Steam, which is fortunate, because it has an impressive degree of fidelity, considering the pixelslop aesthetic. In it, you are tasked with avenging your family blah blah blah, except the killer can be any one of the many NPCs who you otherwise interact with, with clues drip fed across it's (admittedly) brief length. Discuss below in the comments, and vote in the linked comment. It also appears that I forgot to post a vote for Call of Duty last week, you can find the vote for that in the pinned comment.

Just finished a second playthrough of Dread Delusion, which true !g*mers will recognize as rDrama's unanimous 2024 GOTY
(https://rdrama.net/post/328634/the-rdrama-game-of-the-year)
because there are achievements for completing it on hard mode and also for completing it without dying, so I banged both of those out at once.
I also did all the sidequests again, this time making the opposite choices that I did the first time, to see what is different. It was a RIDE. Pwyll collapsed in famine, Paeguth resurged thanks to my putting His essence atop the union council building in Hallowshire and he body horror genocides the humans, instead of subduing the Entombed One I helped her and midgame she fricking leveled the Castle of Ribs, I sabotaged the Clockwork King instead of helping Aphra or Sunil and the kingdom basically went to shit with everyone starving and being killed, and at the end I banished the Angel instead of merging which led to the more or less complete destruction of human society.
Fantastic game and the most photogenic thing I've seen since No Man's Sky.

It does not
In the last mission, the only homo gets killed and so do the two lead w*men
And this is the only trans character whose transness is buried under a million lines of optional reading:
It has 6 iterations, one is trans and the King erases it from ever having existed (after denying it a magical s*x change; the King is narratively a force for Good btw), while the two surviving iterations turn into a monster and ruin the world, respectively.

now is this game schizo-kino or no?
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
As far as written-dialog-only games with deliberately late-90s/early-00s graphics go it's actually extremely well done from a kino perspective. Super engaging once you get into the world, if it clicks you always want to know more and more of the bizarre lore, the aesthetics are top tier retro nightmare shit. It's great schizokino and kino.
It won't be everyone's thing but I really cannot recommend Dread Delusion strongly enough.

How long does a playthrough take? With indies like this, it's hard to get a read on it. Either they're short because one guy made it and didn't have enough time to pad it out or they're crazy long because it was made by one guy and it was his sole obsession and entire life's work.

My first in which I did all but
twothree quests and voraciously explored the entire map, talked to everyone as much as possible, read every book and found probably ~80-90% of the secrets (glimmers of delusion, this is how you level up), decorated houses, learned to play, pimped my airship took around 25 hours almost to the minute.Second time where I rushed everything and still did most of the quests (4-5 or so undone) while skipping all dialog that wasn't new was wrapped in about 12. But I knew what I was doing then and where everything was and avoided combat 90% of the time, just agilitymaxxed except a few points in str int cha and just sprinted everywhere.

Are there actual decisions you make that matter? Or is it like Zelda where the plot is the plot.
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
Yeah AS I SAID ABOVE and in the GOTY announcement, the choices matter quite a lot. Not a lot of realtime effects (it is a 64 bit indie) aside from huge differences in quest resolutions and dialogue and some cosmetic things (ie Castle of Ribs collapsing everyone inside dead, military camp appearing on Lord Rhydder's estate, people who die stay dead, etc) but it all feels very real if you're into the world. The ending has so many possible, wildly different variations too.

Fire Emblem: Thracia, full autism mode emulated translation patch edition.
And Assassin's Creed: Odyssey since I'm Greekpilled right now. I'm currently reading an Aristophanes play and just got to meet the beardless Ubislop version in the game. They had him getting drunk at a party and dunking on political figures, just like real life. Greek comedies aged extremely well.

King shit honestly. Do the old fire emblems hold up? The oldest strategy RPGs I've played are the Advanced war games. Not sure if going further back I would enjoy.

Yeah I grew up on the GBA fire emblems, so the SNES ones that came right before are really similar. I think that whole era aged beautifully. The art looks NOICE. Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn are also amazing.

Finished Fallout 3 plus all the DLC this weekend. I get that New Vegas is widely considered the better game but overall, I still really enjoyed my time in the capital wasteland, even if some of the DLC is underwhelming. I'm probably going to play a shorter game as a palate cleanser before starting NV but I'm looking forward to it.

NV is the better game overall but 3 had a certain charm that NV never quite matched. In particular I really liked Three Dog way more than the radio DJ in NV, listening to him was really comfy while exploring the wasteland.
Jump in the discussion.

He wasn't "the radio DJ in NV" that was Wayne Newton, a real person who actually exists and has a personality.
If I wasn't afraid of glowies having me under investigation for all the recent marsey-related high profile crimes I would be calling for the death of everyone east of the Mississippi.
Also you should have gotten that mod for FNV where there's a radio station broadcasting old Chinese music all the time. It's like being Old Man Redactor when he was out on the bunker line listening to the ChiCom opera on his shortwave radio.

Fallout 3 has some undiluted soul put into it, which unfortunately gets lost in the shit-flinging contest that the fandom engages in so often. You can tell how much the developers cared both about the original games and about their own vision. After 4 and 76 (and to a latter extent the TV series) 3 comes across as incredibly tasteful and genuine. New Vegas is a better inheritor of the original duology's tone and themes, but that doesn't make 3 a bad game overall.

Are you fricking kidding me? They didn't get it at all. The only thing I learned from FO3 is that on the East Coast apparently people don't have souls. It was a pathetic attempt to imitate Fallout by apes. You could go anywhere in the world and find people who are more human and actually understood the material. Fallout: Saigon, Fallout: Seoul, Fallout: Manila, Fallout: St. Nazaire, Fallout: Abadan, Fallout: Lima, Fallout: Luanda. You could find people who could actually make this but apparently not in DC. Which is especially appalling because that's where Microprose were.

Still playing Oblivion, at this point going through oblivion gates for the main quest is so boring I just use the console to noclip to the end.
Honestly I don't really care that they are remaking it. The game is not significantly different from Skyrim, quest markers, fully voiced, combat has less dice rolls, and fast travel make it a much closer game to skyrim than it is to Morrowind.
And don't get me wrong it is a much better game than Morrowind which is an agonizing ugly slog, but when you play Morrowind you think about how the franchise could have gone, while with Oblivion I just think about how Skyrim is better (mostly just because it had a bigger budget, so the voice acting is less shit and the world has more interesting designs).
I think it would be cool to reimagine morrowind almost as a survival game. So much of Vvardenfell is wild and because there is no fast travel you actually had to plan out your excursions while you were still early level. Instead of abandoning that aspect and go the way of morrowind it would be cool to make that aspect deeper and more interesting. Also in Morrowind there was a lot more asking random npcs for directions. I actually liked this. Because there was no questmarker you had no choice but to actually pay attention to what people/ books said. The issue is when there was no dialog option for an npc that really should know where to give you pointers. I think the solution would be to use AI to autogenerate some dialog. Of course this would probably cause backlash.

@Losercel When we kill this guy together who gets to rip his heart out of his chest and hold it up to his face? We'll have to flip a coin on that.
I've had actual fricking cancer and I hate fast travel more. Totally destroys your sense of actually being in a place and the dimensions of it. It's like level scaling. Might seem like a good idea at first glance but it totally destroys the game.
I don't know how old you are but I'm going to assume not very old because you don't like Morrowind. So here's a history lesson: In the 1980s your normal way of playing a game was typing stuff in. Probably not because people were smarter and more literate back then (I mean ffs we all remember we were just typing in "kiss girl" trying to sexually harass every woman in 1840s Brooklyn). But we were used to a command line interface. As the years passed everyone gradually realized that this is a really r-slurred way of interacting with a game because basically you're an neurodivergent trying to guess exactly what words the other neurodivergent who made the game was thinking of. So you see this in vestigial forms, if I'm not mistaken as late as Fallout 1, but it's obsolete.
Your idea of using AI to do this is actually really good. It solves the whole problem. If you wrote something that wasn't 100% predicted by the programmer then AI could still understand it. Which would make this kind of gameplay actually work finally.

I actually agree with you about the negatives of fast travel. That's why my idea for the remake would not have it. I was pointing out how Oblivion was much closer to Skyrim than Morrowind.
And yes Oblivion is much better than Morrowind basically just because the budget was bigger. Being fully voiced + not ugly + enemies not getting stuck on everything (esp cliff racers) makes Oblivion the much better experience. That said I think that Morrowind is more interesting game to play for people who played Skyrim.

You take my wife's name out of your mouth. Morrowind is the one aesthetically pleasing Bethesda game. They actually put some fricking effort into it. One Dutch sperg made Titan Outpost, possibly the most immersive experience I've ever had in a computer game, and he didn't need a fricking budget for that. Just some creativity.

I think that you played Morrowind wrong.
Look, here's how you start the game. You go north from the starting location, there will be a crossroads and a black woman who asks you to escort her back to the shore, and gives you Boots of Blinding Speed. Frick around getting some cash, get to the nearest Mage Guild, ask them to make you the cheapest possible ring with 100% resist magic for 1 second. Wear the ring, cast the spell, wear boots: voila, you now walk about five times faster.
The rest of the game should be approached in the same fashion. It's not cheating if it's basic mechanics!

But to address your point I think playing an RPG should be fun without using a guide. And eventually I did find a way to get rid of the slog. Using exponential growth in INT using fortify INT potions.

In Morrowind the Orcs are blacks, the Khajiit are the gypsies. Redguards are just black-skinned, don't have nothing against them, good people most of them, fiercely loyal and honest.
Tbh I don't think that there were many guides when I played Morrowind for the first time. There were random posts on some phpbb forums going, like, omg this is so broken, and then individual experimentation to discover more broken things in the same vein.

The old man brought home Civilization and I was looking over his shoulder (c. 1992). I swear I can still remember almost every turn in that game. He was the Americans and on his continent there was some hostile civilization to the east. He had to decide between building a militia and a phalanx. I couldn't understand what the frick the phalanx icon was supposed to be. It looked like a guy had a plant growing out of his head. There weren't a lot of pixels to work with back then.

I'm glad someone finally has an opinion on the games I'm running 4 works for me, though what's so bad about 5? It's the best Civ I've played (I've only played I, V, and VI).

Here's a essaypost about it
https://www.sullla.com/Civ5/whatwentwrong.html
Mostly it's 1UPT. 1UPT simply does not work for a Civilization level abstraction and the benefit of adding a "tactical" element is actually a detriment. Global Happiness is cancer too. + a bunch of other shit.
Genuinely I do think 4 would make for a better topic bc there is a much richer modding scene with many mods still in development

Did Civ 5 ever get any good total conversion mods? I don't remember any from when it was still the newest Civ.
Rhye is actually still working on a Rhye's and Fall from Civ 5 but I haven't tried it yet. He also says he wants to port it over to Civ 7, but time will tell if that's actually feasible.

Vox Populi is I believe the closest thing. Civ5 RfC was a neat surprise but it's affected by all of the faults of Civ5, especially with how much irl ground a tile is supposed to take up on a scaled Earth map. Yeah one thing you have to understand about Civ is that this goes way back. Even Civ 1 was totally ripping off its combat system from Empire which goes back to the 1970s.
(Boomer story about Empire: I heard a podcast where the guy who made this game was interviewed. His day job was for the Air Force planning which places to nuke in Russia. He was asked what he thought of the movie Wargames.
The sense of was so thick you couldn't cut it with a cleaver.)
Anyway my point is for frick's sake do not try to reinvent the wheel. These things like how to do combat in a strategy game, these were figured out literally before we were born by people smarter than us.

Civ V: The Only Civilization Game That Matters, All Others Can Suck It
Alright, listen up, you uncultured swines. I'm about to lay down some truth bombs about why Civilization V (Civ V) is the pinnacle of gaming, and why every other Civ game can go straight to the trash bin, where they belong. Buckle up.
Civ V: A Masterpiece of Modern Gaming
First off, let's talk about graphics. Civ V came out looking like a god darn renaissance painting compared to its predecessors. Civ IV looked like something your little brother would scribble with crayons. Civ V? It's like they hired Michelangelo to design each tile. The hex grid? Revolutionary. It's like someone finally had the guts to tell the world, "Square tiles are for squares!" The hex system made strategy deeper than your average incel's basement dwelling.
Now, gameplay. Civ V took the series from a bland, turn-based strategy game to a dynamic, living world where your choices actually matter. The introduction of one-unit-per-tile turned the game into a chessboard where every piece had weight. Remember those stacks of doom in earlier games? Yeah, Civ V laughed at that concept and said, "Nah, let's make players think for once." Every move counts, every unit placement can turn the tide of war or diplomacy.
AI? In Civ V, it actually exists. Unlike Civ IV where the AI had the strategic acumen of a goldfish, Civ V's AI can sometimes give you a run for your money. Sure, they might still have their moments of sheer stupidity, but at least they're not just sitting there waiting for you to steamroll them. This makes the game challenging, and not in that "I'm banging my head against the wall" way, but in a "I might actually lose this if I don't play my cards right" way.
Modding. Oh, the modding. Civ V opened up like a cheap hooker on a Saturday night to modders. The community created content that not only extended the game's lifespan but made it so diverse you could play something new every time. From mods that add new civilizations to those that change the entire gameplay mechanics, Civ V became a canvas for creativity. Civ VI tried, but let's be real, it's like comparing a crayon drawing to an oil painting.
Civilization VI - The Disappointment
Now, let's talk about the abomination known as Civ VI. What were they thinking? They took everything beautiful about Civ V and decided to make it more "accessible". Districts? More like "distractions". The game became so convoluted, trying to be all things to all players, that it lost its soul. Civ V was elegant; Civ VI is a gaudy mess. The UI looks like it was designed by someone who just discovered the color wheel. And don't get me started on the AI in VI, which feels like it regressed back to Civ IV levels of brain damage.
The Early Games - Civ I to IV, Pure Garbage
Going back further, Civ I was like playing chess with pieces made of cardboard. Civ II? Slightly better, but still felt like you were navigating through a DOS command prompt. Civ III? More of the same with a bit of color. Civ IV was the first to show some promise, but it was like a beta version of Civ V - a rough draft of what could be.
Why Civ V Stands Alone
Cultural Victory: Civ V made cultural victories feel like you were actually spreading your culture, not just building a bunch of theaters.
Diplomacy: The diplomacy was nuanced, with leaders having personalities and agendas, making each game feel unique.
Soundtrack: The music in Civ V is like an epic saga playing in the background, making every moment feel monumental.
The Community Agrees
Just look at the forums, the discussions, the mods. Civ V is still the game that people come back to, that people mod, that people obsess over. Civ VI might have its fans, but it's like comparing a candle to the sun.
In Conclusion
Civilization V isn't just the best in the series; it's arguably the best games ever made, period. It refined strategy gaming, made every decision count, and did so with style and grace. The other Civ games? They're just pale imitations, trying to capture lightning in a bottle that Civ V already owns. If you haven't played Civ V, you're not just missing out; you're living in a lesser reality. Get with the program, or stay in the trash heap with the rest of the garbage games.
Long live Civ V, and may all other Civs rot in obscurity.

I recently played through all the Halo games, and I had a really good time. I usually only replay Reach and ODST. There's a mod I like for Reach that adds some new (old) guns and tweaks some of the combat encounters to be more interesting/difficult.
I played through the rest with some mods (except 2 bc I couldn't find a good one). I played through CE with a rebalance mod that made it feel so good to play. I didn't even read the changes it made, I just gave it a try and had a blast. It turned The Library into one of my favourite levels.
2's always difficult to go back to for me. The first few levels are incredible, I like the Arbiter but his levels kind of suck. The end is a slog because the brutes aren't fun to fight.
3 is always good. Played it with another "rebalance" mod that added some of the guns from ODST and tweaked some levels and fights. Didn't really notice it too much.
ODST is kino. The rebalance mod added some probably OP weapons to the Mombasa streets levels but you had to find them and couldn't get more ammo. So it felt great to find them and actually be powerful for a bit. Unbelievable soundtrack too.
Reach>ODST>CE>3>2

Dave the Diver: V. casual but they just keep throwing so much different stuff at you it holds the interest. My favorite part is you have the weeb (BIPOC) who studied the sushi blade and is a pretty cool dude and also the weeb (White) who is smelly and obese with a waifu, but has still mastered gunsmithing as the first mastered sushi. I also wasn't expecting the immediate introduction of kinda-Mongolian mermaids.
Valheim: Solo. Pretty cool overall. I appreciate how making paths and bridges is legit useful. Finding it too slow paced solo, I think I'm gonna beat the 2nd boss and lay it aside for a bit. The way that close up it's Minecraft-level graphics but far away everything is filtered and shadered is very distinctive. Yggdrasil the world-tree up in the sky

Beat stalker 2 and am going through ghostwire: Tokyo right now
Stalker 2 was amazing except for bugs after a certain point in the story and the aimbot npcs
Ghostwire is fun but I'm giving up on 100% cause the 240,000 spirits is a pain in the butt

Are the older ones open world as well? I imagine I'd struggle playing them with a controller tbh but it's what I got. Maybe the series x version addresses controller aim a bit
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
The older ones are not open world like 2, instead their maps are made of small segmented areas where you have to transition from one to another through gates. You would be amazed at how much the older maps were reused to (almost) seamlessly recreate the Zone in 2. Each area is about the size of a region in 2.
The s*x box version does have in-built controller support and I found it to be quite good. The mechanics are janky and most of the bugs are cross-platform. The very first game (Shadow of Chernobyl) has an incredible atmosphere of industrial decay and dread, which I think 2 doesn't reach quite yet. The whole original trilogy is well-worth a visit if you enjoyed 2, but be prepared to deal with 2000s graphics and euro-autism.

Good luck! Would be interesting to see what someone rolling back from 2 will think of the original titles. I thought the amount of fan service and callbacks was a bit too much by the end of 2, so maybe there will be greater appreciation for that stuff if you learn it in the reverse order. Play them in order of release: Shadow of Chernobyl -> Clear Sky -> Call of Pripyat
