Mechanically it's great. I'm glad that it's had so much influence on other games.

But whenever I play it and succeed at something in this fantasy world I can't help but think "What in the frick am I doing with my life?" It really needed some more goals in it because losing your virginity in the Sims is the least rewarding experience ever.

If nothing else, designing your own bizarre custom house in it is endless fun.

I played this game so much when I was a kid. One of my favorite gaming moments is being like 10 years old and watching my miserable bachelor Sim sob to himself while eating cans of baked beans in his filthy shoebox of a house late at night.

None of the subsequent The Sims games ever managed to match the impeccable, weirdly creepy vibes of the first one, and the series as it exists today is an altogether different beast.

But I learned a lot about the Sims when I was researching Will Wright for my Spore effortpost. It may be a foid coded EA cash cow now but when the first one came out it was an experimental sim game like no other. A lot of thought and creativity and SOVL went into the first one.

I tried Xenonauts 2. I've been getting off buying Early Access things but I felt like, given I can tell from reviews it doesn't suck butt, I'm gonna play any kind of X-COM eventually, might as well buy this one. So Xenonauts 1 was a 21st century UI for 90s X-COM. It looks like Xenonauts 2 is taking the 90s X-COM gameplay with more varied mission types from 21st century XCOM, including a faction of humans aligned with the aliens. This leads to an amusing bit that XCOM didn't do, where you end up doing an alien autopsy and the result is "Yeah this is just a dude." It looks like it will be a good variant of X-COM but I realized I hadn't even started on the beta branch so I was way too similar to Xenonauts 1 and put it aside till release. I hope they do something about the air combat, that is still the same as Xenonauts 1 and it's annoying.

Bioshock 2. Is good, but I feel like they wasted an opportunity by having the setting so unchanged. Same as Fallout's problem: you guys have been surviving in this post-cataclysm for years, you think you'd clean the place a little and not just leave it all post-cataclysmic. Bioshocks showed the problem of games journos even before they went woke, they were all enthusing about the moral nuance when it's like: "Would you like to kill a little girl for small material gain Y/N".

I started playing the carp game and the carp was right, it's fun. I'm in the hallowshire now and the quest design does feel morrowindy but something about the gameplay and aesthetic does make it feel deliberately lowfi indie game rather than actually feeling either classic or the dev doing their best. Combat in particular is meh but it's so easy that it doesn't matter. I chose to talk the lad out of the giant mushroom and think I will go with that sort of anti :ramonajak: choice.

I'm getting into Dread Delusion. It runs like absolute crap on my Steam :marseyfreeman: Deck so I am playing it on my desktop and it is pretty :marseyroan: darn good. Pretty much the only game I've played this week is Songs of Syx. I'm getting a little frustrated with the pacing of it. It's just a bit too slow: there are long periods of doing pretty much nothing because you're hamstrung by resources or population. It fails to keep you engaged in the moment-to-moment compared to RimWorld.

I have some free time this week. I'm flirting with the idea of finally sinking some time into X4: Foundations. I've said this to myself for several years now.

STALKER 2 still I thought I finished it after the Faust boss fight but unfortunately it just doesn't want to stop.

The longer I play the buggier it gets and the story at this point or the motivations of the main characters is basically incoherent. At first you want to get your artifact back, then eliminate Monolith which I think I did(?) now it's some c-consciousness something or other and what I guess is the main guy Sterlock from the older games who says I shouldn't be on anyone's side but I really don't know who's side I'm on or why I'm still there at all tbh?

I'd like to stop playing tbh but I have an affliction where once I put in so much time in a game I will literally punish myself to keep playing it until I beat it which this experience seems to be turning into.
