Game to Discuss?

Goat Simulator. I truthfully forgot about this game from the moment I last closed it (around 7 years ago) til about a week ago, when I'd forgotten whatever it was I'd originally wanted to say about Satisfactory. I have just under an hour of play time, representing a single playing session, and half-memories of the madcap mixture of genres, outright bugs, "bugs," and attempts at humor which probably come off as dated, even to the erudite and learned rdrama dot net. I guess there's also somehow a remaster of the game, which is if nothing else an indictment of our culture's inability to make anything new, instead preferring to "remaster" (theoretically) intentionally bad games. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. Kinda fun, although the combat doesn't work as well as the Batman games it's obviously aping.

I don't buy "orcs are le black people!" (I mean most of them have low class British accents, come on), but I think that inherently evil hideous humanoid monsters with culture and language, when combined with open world M-rated vidya violence, ends up giving off this weird genocidal vibe. In the movies, the orcs are a frightening enemy army. In this game, your overpowered unkillable ubermensch just sees that something is an orc, and then you run up to him and gleefully gut him like a fish before you explode his mate's head and then dominate another one's mind with elf magic to make him murder his own kind. Kill orcs. Behead orcs. Roundhouse kick an orc into the concrete.

I'm sure that someone on the writing team would be at least vaguely aware of how this gameplay loop is mismatched to Tolkien. But even if the story ends up complicating the murder spree, it's still what the entire game is built around. It's fun, but the only way to really play it is to forget about LOTR and accept that it's just another bloody bideo game Skinner box where you get a little bit of jouissance every time another filthy subhuman's head explodes.

Yeah I was thinking of replaying this soon but it's just not a Tolkien game

Aren't both of these game extremely easy? Like, enemies surround you but attack one by one?

I don't remember it as particularly challenging but I don't recall it being that obviously unchallenging, but it was years back. Fun in any case

Anyways, more seriously, this is the first game I can remember hating viscerally, because it seemed to run so counter to the actual books. I was innocent to this being WB games entire schtick - a Ubisoft shaped skinner box, wearing the skin of one of their many popular movies. Still can't believe it got a sequel.

The sequel is mostly notable today for requiring you to pay real money if you didn't want to grind the single player game for hundreds of hours or something for the ending.

You could definitely make an action game based on battles from LotR, or a game about a human resistance in Mordor, but the lone edgelord mass shooter turning hundreds of orcs into paste was broken from its inception.

Also all anybody talks about this game is the "nemesis system" which is mildly amusing, but all the orcs are just interchangeable psychos who like causing pain. This system would actually work in like an original sci-fi or fantasy IP where they created at least a few dozen characters with different species, genders, character designs, styles of speaking, etc. In that game, it would really feel like the player's experience was determining who was throwaway fodder and who was your personal white whale. But as it is, I'm not going to soypoint because "Krimp Beastmaster" popped up again.

>You could definitely make an action game based on battles from LotR, or a game about a human resistance in Mordor

Yea, I can imagine that being a lot of fun. The problem is that WB is a games studio which only innovates by accident, and in 2011 or whenever they started development, the big genre was massive open world games with extremely limited action palettes and way too many collectibles.

I dislike the nemesis system, as I remember it, it seemed like the kind of thing prone to causing degenerate gameplay.

There was a turned based RPG lord of the rings in the Xbox era that loosely followed the events of the books (with a completely original story) that I liked. But the cool part was you got to do stuff like fight endless waves of enemies at helms deep and minas tirath. Teenage me enjoyed it at least.

I just tell myself to completely ignore the story.

Running around killing Orks, even the same guy, again and again is really fun though.
