Game to Discuss?
This week's game is supposed to be Disgaea which I'm not familiar with. Is it really a Cirno post like @Ninjjer claims?
Is it anything like Fire Emblem

Disgaea is vaguely kinda like Fire Emblem, I guess. The gameplay is fun, but the art style is distressingly japanese. There's an awful lot of grinding and some clever mixups to the usual grid-based tactical gameplay (most characters can throw other characters around, for example).

Not one of those Japanese tropes I personally enjoy.
Sorry to continue what might be an odd comparison, but I enjoy Fire Emblem the most when I don't grind at all and I have to make the best choices with what I have

Sid Meier's Covert Action. I've actually beaten this game, caught all the terrorist leaders in the world. Unfortunately it's a game from 1990 and it took me so many years so it was after 9-11 and we had a new crop of Islamist terrorists in the real world by then.

I played Never Second in Rome, an RPG-esque sequel to A Legionary's Life. It just came out in early access. It's pretty fun, you're a centurion training a legion so you need to balance being a chad individually with helping your men not to suck and die. You're basically along for the ride with Caesar for the entire Commentaries on the Gallic War—the civil war is to be added later. As far as its early access state goes, it needs some balance and UI improvements.

Skyrim > Oblivion > Morrowind
Morrowind has almost no voice acting, way to many exploits, terrible visuals, and the worst combat. Enemies get stuck on things constantly. Dungeons are mostly slim hallways themed to whatever type of dungeon it is. Most interesting plot but not executed properly, you aren't made to care about the interesting bits of the story.
Oblivion has voice acting but there is a lot of issues with it. Not enough actors and bloopers include in the final game diminish the game greatly. The graphics are much higher fidelity but there isn't enough diversity in visuals. Also the designs are too mainstream bland fantasy. Lots of copy paste rooms in dungeons, most obviously that one cave layout that is spammed hundreds of times often within the same dungeon.
Skyrim has the best voice acting of the series. There are games that do it better but not in the scrolls series. The game isn't perfect graphically but it is very good. While Morrowind had good diversity but bad quality and Oblivion had ok quality Skyrim has pretty solid diversity and the highest quality. Dungeons feel less copy paste and more hand crafted. I'm sure there are parts reused but it is less offensive. Spellmaking has been removed which is a loss. Some guild quests are crap, but thieves guild is the best in the series.
Now you might say but muh dumbed down rpg elements but none of the games were good at that. Scrolls games are best as walking simulators where you go to cool places and find cool stuff.

For sure Skyrim is the best as far as graphics and sound goes
but
It's not just that
Spell crafting being gone is minor compared to the missing stats system
Can't increase movement speed, can't so much as swing a sword in midair anymore, you're just a healthbar and a weapon grade, even your skill points don't really matter at all
I mean you can just recruit Lydia and have her fight everything, because only you can kill her, it's THAT dumbed down
We're talking about a game where every dungeon has the same "match the symbols" puzzle
That thing we make toddlers do
Thieves guild in Oblivion was better
But for sure Thieves guild in Skyrim is one of the best quests in Skyrim, Dark Brotherhood about ties with it, and both are pretty good in their own right
Just a shame that nothing else in the game even comes close, they could at least have put some effort into the main quest

Skyrim is hard carried by mods. Oblivion has the best quest lines but otherwise looks ugly and generic. Morrowind has the most diverse and interesting world and the best dungeons.

hard disagree, it's skyrim>morrowind>oblivion
morrowind's grunge new weird aesthetic is still executed well enough to be visually pleasing in its own neurodivergent way and the map design has many more cool places compared to oblivion (aka the point of an elderscrolls game)
not to mention that cool stuff is a little better since artifacts and shit look shiny and activate my magpie sensibilities more than other elderscrolls games
youre right about skyrim it r*pes the other two hard, esp considering the dragonborn dlc which is atmospheric ludokino straight from the freezing peaks of aryanheaven

They absolutely padded the game with a ton of grindy repetitive shit, 1000s of icons on the map and activating countless radio towers like Farcry. But despite all of it I'm still having a blast.

I played some Bubble Tanks 2 and 3 on my work laptop to relive the past.
Having pre-made tanks in 2 was frustrating. You go from having a very effective shield to a shitty stun in one of the paths. Also the battlefields were so small dodging was impossible with quite a few enemies, so I either got hit multiple times or ejected to a nearby bubble by accident.

Been playing some demos. Both Knights in Tight Spaces and SiegeCaster.
Siege caster seems pretty cool, basically you build a castle and turrets and then manually shoot the turrets at enemies. All of the turrets are aimed at your cursor. The different turrets do different damage to different enemies and have different ballistics which makes it interesting. Expanding your fortress is a balancing act of getting resources you need while not overextending. Nothing groundbreaking but a fun game that is well thought out.
Knights in Tight Spaces is a turn based semi rougelike strategy game. It is similar to into the breach which was very good.
I recommend both of these demos.

Playing Avowed. 8 hours in and I'm still liking it so far. Exploration is fun with a lot to find, in the city you can climb all over the rooftops. The writing is ok, the quippiness mostly appears as dialogue options for your character. The first companion Kai is a little snarky but he's ok, the fact that he's voiced by Garrus helps. The second is a dwarf and I solidly don't like him. He's definitely quippy, I've only had him for an hour and I'm already going to get rid of him as soon as I can. Combats a little stiff but it works and is still miles better than any bethesda game. I like a fair bit of the lore, it makes me want to give POE another go even though I HATE
RTWP.
Would recommend
(its on gamepass don't spend money on it it'll probably be in humble choice in a year)

AC 0 is still the peak of the series but 4s pretty solid too.
Get Project Wingman after, it's a darn good clone with some aspects I actually like more (competent AI wingmen)

Personally I've been playing the last of the shitpost Gamepass games that interest me before my sub experies. It's not interesting enough to leave running so I usually just get a month or two at a time every once in a while.
I've been having stupid fun with the Ryse Son of Rome gladiator themed multiplayer though
Killing Britons and riling up the crowd never gets old, and the match intro where you walk into the Colosseum is KINO

In recent weeks: Finished up Skyrim. Straight decrease in soul since Morrowind, you hate to see it. Particularly I didn't like how self-insistent the main quest was (in roleplaying terms, I know mechanistically you can frick off at any point). Back in Morrowind Caius Cosades was like "Go investigate Dagoth Ur and Nerevar shit for me while you're earning a living, I'll be chilling shirtless smoking skooma" and then "I'm getting canned for smoking too much skooma, I'm putting you in charge of Dagoth Ur business, do as you like" then in Skyrim it's "A fricking DRAGON is attacking right now do the needful immmediately". If the decline continues I doubt Elder Scrolls VI will be worth it.
Did a freeform run of Frostpunk 2. Fun. My random goal was to hoard vast stockpiles, so after I nearly got deposed during the first two storms it was satisfying to have most of the stockpiles when the third hit and I got my achievement for keeping everyone comfy and toasty during the whole blizzard.
Then I played a few scenarios of old Rollercoaster Tycoon via OpenRCT2. Really held up. At one point I was curious on some point of mechanics and I figured since OpenRCT2 reimplemented it open source I'll just look it up, but it turns out the C++ is written directly after Chris Sawyer's assembly, and it's full assembly style, bit shifting and masking against constants of obscure derivation. Then incidentally I saw that Parkitect is the modernized Rollercoaster Tycoon and been playing that. A little decline in soul here too (no one claps when you win a scenario) but makes up for it with many improvements. The mod to unlock the camera is essential, the mod to have the camera ride the rides is inessential but fun. One thing I appreciate about these games is you can and should definitely approach it as "Make a cool rollercoaster, shake them up but not too rough, do cool rollercoaster moves" rather than caring about the actual formula that calculates your scores.

Yeah Skyrim and Oblivion have main quests that build to fast. It is weird to steal crap for the thieves guild while the apocalypse is happening. At least in Skyrim the main story doesn't start out at 100% urgency. You are just some dude who saw the first dragon attack. While in Oblivion you are instantly tasked to bring an incredibly powerful artifact to safety by the emperor himself.
I don't know why but I remain optimistic about ES6. Maybe I think that failing with Starfield will give the studio the kick in the pants it needed.

Messed with DOS emulation a bunch, which just reminded me the several hundred good DOS games have already gotten DOSBox versions on GOG or Steam or even a '90s console version, and the remaining thousands of games are mostly butt. Mostly. A few hidden gems here and there, like Zyclunt, which is the best name ever.
On PC been playing a recent game called Guns of Fury, which was kind of sold as a Metal Slug homage, and it is definitely not. I mean, nothing is as good as Metal Slug, but this just looks like Metal Slug, it doesn't play like it. It's a metroidvania, not a run & gun. And it's fine as far as those go but too backtrack-y, as many of them are.
Also some UFO 50. I'm up to like 46/50 games played at this point after owning it for months. Lotta value in that if you like NES style games.
Really want to get around to some of the big recent games (Avowed, Stalker 2, Yakuza Hawaii, Kingdom Come 2, Civ VII) but I can't stop tinkering with emulators. Especially the obscure shit that takes some fighting with to get running: DOS, FM Towns, Sharp X1 and x68000, MSX 1 and 2, Amiga, Spectrum ZX, Amstrad. It's like it's filling that need to tinker and build shit outside that I can't do in the winter.

You say that but carpathianflorist is actually a cool guy. We met at Ruq-con (same hotel floor) and after the VIP party we went to a bar for some more drinks. He's kind of strange, he has rainbow hair and a lilac suit (he likes to be counter-culture) but he's a smart guy who makes the types of joke that you wouldn't repeat around deal old Grandma, over all fun to be around. The only odd thing was when I went to the urinal before I left he came up behind me, slipped a finger in my butt and said "No one will believe you" and walked off without another word. Not a bad guy when you get to know him.

Been playing Yakuza 3 and some
Persona 4. Y3 has enemies block a lot which is a bit annoying at first but it does make the combat less mindless, I actually have to think about crowd control and item usage. P4 is proving to be surprisingly fun even though it has all the gameplay annoyances I disliked in P3P, playing on hard and a couple minor adjustmenrs go a long way. Even if it makes me feel like Jamal-kun.

recently played the demo for skin deep. If I was a youtuber I would probably call it an immersive sim, but it really plays like a more open ended metal gear game. Very goofy style and the gameplay seems cool, the demo is a little basic but that is to be expected.
Some funny parts are how enemies you kill have their heads pop off and fly back to a regenerator machine, to permanantly eliminate them you can flush their head down a potty or something similar. Also you rescue cats.
