Game to Discuss?
I'm sure Animal Crossing: New Horizons isn't the best Animal Crossing game. There are probably about 30 of these game, if I had to guess, and the odds of the latest one being the best are slim indeed. However, it's the one I've played, and therefore the one we're discussing this week. It's probably a lot like the other Animal Crossing games, so if you've played any of those, you're good to vote on the poll. Animal Crossing is Nintendo's take on the MMO: softer, gentler, and (unusually) better graphics than most of that venerable genre. Removing the combat element from the traditional MMO, you are left with a wide variety of crafting and collecting activities, as you gradually establish a settlement for the menagerie that moves in over time. Discuss below, and vote in the pinned comment.

AC:NH is probably one of the biggest highway robberies in gaming. Literally came out as soon as the covid lockdowns began it's no wonder it sold so much only for it to get one big update and then left to rot. FFS there's still only one store upgrade.

I put 200 hours into it when it came out, and while I had fun it was lacking all the cool lategame things New Leaf had.
Apparently the updates and dlc fixes this, but by the time they came out I was done with the game lol.

The only "animal crossings" I ever seen was in Idaho when some wild turkeys flew in front of our car.
And given the amount of extreme gold/silver tunnels those desperates ran in the 1890s, they probably didn't make it that far.

I tried Spider-Man 2 having enjoyed the first game, but it seems kinda bad.
It's not even the constant political grandstanding that's putting me off, a lot of the story just feels like slop and it's driven by tedious "walk around on foot and press f when prompted" sections.
Even the cutscenes seem poorly animated and a downgrade from the last game. I get the sense it was rushed out as a cash grab.

I gave up right around the point where Peter and his fàg green goblin boyfriend are walking around the big science building. It's like thirty minutes of walking around hearing people slobber on each others peepees, except every few moments some jigaboo has to enter the scene and talk in a thick African accent because the biscuit lipped monkeys can absolutely do science, too, you bigot, and we are going to remind you repeatedly!

I tried Civilization 3 again because I haven't played it since I was a kid. Combat still sucks. Why the frick would a babylonian bowman elite lose to basic warrior with both on plains?
And then said warrior next turn can just go and destroy my cite (I forgot this version the cities didnt have health)

Civ4, Civ 6 and Majesty.
First two everyone knows,
Majesty has a really cool concept of RTS with indirect unit control with unit's being more of NPC's than obedient drones they usually are. But this is also one of those early 2000's games that had in house game-testing with people who had intimate knowledge of the game, the difficulty of the missions is often not as described. And the RNG of player's spawn is huge swing factor in it too, sometimes having you being attacked in the first 15 seconds of a mission making it literally impossible to even build a single building, other times you have 2 minutes or so in the same mission just because your spawn is diffrent.
I heard that one of the quests is borderline impossible without exploits, but I wouldn't know which one, since I got stuck on more than one.
Still a good game, just janky.

Tried avowed. Got past tutorial and hated it so much im done with it.
It is such hollow game. And i hate how it looks like.
Combat felt fine. But not enough to justify playing it anymore. Its like fps game in fantasy game skin in hollow open world.
Playing it just made me want to play skyrim. Atmosphere alone is what i crave.

Sid Meier's Pirates! but it's got the typical problem. It ramps up from easy to way too high really high. I got these b-words spinning around my dance floor as easy as I flirt with chicks in real life but the top level sword fights are basically impossible.
It's like in high levels of Covert Action.

It's interesting that the game doesn't end at a specific time but your character does eventually get too old to do anything.

I bought one of the chinashit retro gaming emulator sticks from temu and it came with 100,000 games with 20 emulators including MAME. The only thing is the NES games are laggy AF but for some reason all the Playstation games and Gamecube games run smooth. Still worth the $29 I paid for it.

Ive been playing Jedi Survivor and GTA V Enhanced.
Jedi Survivor is really good, so far at least. Im about 7 hours in, just met who I assume is the big bad. The "High Republic" stuff hasnt interested me so far (or ever) but Im enjoying the gameplay. The PC performance is so bad, but it also doesnt seem to make sense. The first time I booted it up, it ran terribly. The second time it ran perfectly, and the third it ran better than the first but still not good.
GTAV Enhanced is just the same old thing but better. I'm forever hooked on GTA Online and now I get to play it with ray tracing

FF 7 rebirth on PC. There's a lot of padding in the game - a lot of mini games and activating radio towers but somehow I'm completely captivated by in. They made some solid improvements to the combat system and for the most part all the mini games are decent especially the queens blood card game. Plus there's a lot of nostalgia.

Haven't been active here lately, a quick update.
I finally finished Dynasty Warriors Origins with all the achievements. The game itself is very good, but there are a few little bits that are really annoying. Firstly, the story of the MC and his origin is complete nonsense, and secondly, the character interactions are surrounded by a homoerotic aura that is second to none. You can find explanations on the net that he was originally a freely customizable main character and that the interactions with a female MC would make sense - complete nonsense as women have no place in the time of the three kingdoms. Nevertheless, a lot of effort has been put into the historical realms in particular, even though the hypothetical paths are complete garbage. I had to make an effort, especially for the last collectibles (weapons, horses, combat types), as these are not necessarily difficult, but the challenges are so arbitrarily defined that you have to hope for the survival of your own officers and especially the commanders against five flies, while you have difficulties against Demonbane on the other side of the map. And the scripted stages don't make it any easier.
In addition, I finished Avowed after 40 hours and the game wasn't bad at all. Of course, there is an almost unbelievable amount of things to get upset about, but basically this has nothing to do with the game itself. The gameplay, i.e. the combat, although pretty braindead, is more than solid and reminiscent of old MMO classics. You don't really miss other absent RPG mechanics. Everything else is terrible shit. Aside from the abysmally bad companions, except Kai, he's okay, the plain and completely predictable main story, the low enemy variety and the terrible MMOesque gearing system, you still have to deal with an unbearable woken agenda, so random NPCs can't wait to finally dump their trauma on you. But most of all, the writers don't understand socio-economic relationships and therefore everything is complete nonsense. Dwarves who have been holed up in a terrible place for thousands of years in a tiny underground fortress have found their nemesis in buffoons twenty meters away from their kingdom. The central questing hub in the third zone is a gathering place for the dregs of society, but there is no swearing or fighting, everyone is friendly and kind to each other. These are just a few examples, but basically you just can't take anything seriously and play the game as a single-player MMO. And since normal MMOs are absolutely terribly written, it makes no difference. So you skip dialog (especially with the furry companion, just wtf) and spam your skills while randomly walking around (exploring) and watching Family Guy on your second screen. Decent enough.
I also had no desire for games in my backlog and started KCD2. The game is very similar to its predecessor and there is a lot to experience, discover and do. The added crafting options actually make it more enjoyable, you can now trade with NPCs instantly and their interactions with the player and reactions to your actions are really impressive. The world is excellent, but the actual combat is so brain dead that you have to get mods to make everything more difficult. I'm completely serious, I think you can win any fight with a sword if you just left click. Also, you level up so fast that nothing is really challenging. Nevertheless, it took me 50 hours just to play the first map and apart from a few Eurojank moments, I really can't complain - and yes I'm stealing everything.
Some CS and Among Us, too. That shit is fun for like twenty minutes.

I like the OC in Origins. Could do with some polishing, but I really like the youxia aesthetic.
Dynasty Warriors has been a fujo franchise for more than a decade already, so complaining about the Fuji stuff is kind of late.
Being practically the fourth brother to Liu Bei, or having Cao Cao saying all the cheesy line about you fulfills the Three Kingdoms fantasy I never knew I wanted.
Yeah it is kinda gay, but it's fun.

Pretty awesome but as a singleplayer experience, I think World was slightly better. I am glad fights don't take as long though. Great intro to the series for new players too

I played that Opus Echos of Star song which is an anime style sci-fi game out of Taiwan about space oil made from souls prospecting and doomed love. I was convinced to play it by a friend who described it in a way that made me think it was going to be like To The Moon or one of those VNs where the heroine gets butt cancer and you cry at the end because she survives or they reunite in Shinto Heaven or whatever. Opus is not this, it dripfeeds hints that the heroine is ill and that the space soul oil lets people reunite and live together after death until they're used to make funkopops or something idk. It does not do this, instead at the end she gets marooned on a comet, plants some flowers and probably dies slowly and painfully and the dude finds the comet when's hes 90 and the leader of space China. I still expected that uplifting crying moment where the music swells as he dies in the space oil and rejoins her, no he just hallucinates her on a hill and then sees the flowers and dies and the credits roll showing her dying on the comet over several years. Even worse is the implication in the tombs they are looting for space oil that they are the reincarnations of two starcrossed lovers who are doomed to constantly reincarnate and for her to die before they can be properly happy which is unbelievably bleak and apparently also a famous Chinese legend?
This game made me feel depressed 8/10.

Still playing AC Origins
which I've almost finished. I beat the game and now I'm playing the DLCs for the first time since I got the super duper everything included version of the game for pretty cheap. I got the same deal on Odyssey so I might power through that next
It's funny. When I first played Origins back in 2017, the shift to RPG bothered me and I missed the older Assassin's Creed formula. I didn't even finish it then
But I got a hankering to play it again when I saw the sale and because I wanted another swords and sandals adventure after Ryse
For some reason I've fallen in love with it the second time around and I'm eager to move on to Odyssey, an even longer game
I think I randomly just get into the mood for long RPGs and Origins and Odyssey are scratching an itch. I think I've also accepted the Assassin's Creed formula shift and it just doesn't bug me anymore. Plus I can still play the old games whenever what with ACIII remastered (which came with my Odyssey purchase) Ezio Trilogy, Rogue remastered, etc. I might even go back and try Unity and Syndicate again

Valhalla also made me appreciate the antiquity RPGs more because that game just had some poor design decisions
A lot of people who loved Origins and Odyssey drew the line at Valhalla so I guess those games look better in retrospect
I'm actually kinda excited for Shadows but I can wait for a sale lol

Origins and Odyssey really get a bad wrap. Exploration was fun. The cities in Odyssey were amazing, especially Athens. Walking around seeing how these historic landmarks were imagined back in ancient Greece was cool. I even enjoyed the grind aspects of the game.
With that said, Valhalla was terrible. There's like no cities in the game (at least within the first 20 or so hours I played) and they cranked those stupid go to this marker and open this chest quests from 30% to 80%.
I saw this image, said "why am I doing this" and just shut the thing down.

I liked Odyssey, Origins wasn't really my thing. I emulated the first game at one point for reasons I can't recall, and enjoyed it well enough, but those games were the first ones I really played much of (I guess I also played Black Flag, which despite the internet fan cult is actually peak ubi collectathon sloppa). I should really go back and actually try the first game properly, but I've got way too much backlog for that right now, and probably for the rest of time.

Speaking of collectathons, Assassin's Creed 1 actually has one of my favorite collectable ideas in the form of Templar Knights. Literal knights from the Templars are scattered around the game's world. Some are hidden and you get an achievement for defeating them all, so they're living collectibles.
Each knight is a mini boss fight so you have something to do besides just finding them. They're also cleverly located to give the players a real challenge. Many of them are placed just close enough to city guards to be drawn in if the player starts a fight. Some are even placed along the routes the main plot targets will use to flee so you'd better kill them before that point. Some are near synch points and will ambush you when you're just trying to synchronize. Some are chilling in rooftop alcoves and will trigger surprise fights when you thought you were safe exploring.
Of course others are hidden well enough that you have to actually search for them, so they're like a cross between bosses Ubisoft wants you to run into and a completionist activity. More games should have interesting collectibles like that
Of course AC1 also has the flags which are extremely annoying

I've done some modding (with an account I don't want associationed with rdrama so I'm being vague) so I've spend a lot of time recently staring at vidya and not playing it
I'll probably work on finishing my backlog of Fantasy Life and Twilight Princess, after that it's waiting for the steam summer sale to get Dark Soul since that has been on my radar because I'm a big 3d Zelda fan and they are pretty similar in terms of exploration

This week, I've been playing Elin and Two Point museum. Elin is growing on me, I actually think its settlement building feature is better than Animal Crossing's is, though admittedly NPCs are cardboard cutouts compared to the ones in Animal Crossing. Two Point Museum is pretty good, a lot of the people management mechanics finally feel at home for the first time, though the tedious (albeit possibly realistic) gacha grind (complete with lootboxes) is tiresome as frick. Still gonna finish the game, though. I've also been playing Far Cry 5 as it was on a deep discount, and it's okay.

That's my favorite one for two reasons: Best map to just frick around in, and Far Crys are made for fricking around. Fishing, hunting, skydiving, all sorts of planes, boats, copters, etc. Second is the arcade mode, taking that big bloated game and reducing it down to single "1v100" type maps, and the crazy maps the community has created.

I've been finding it markedly less fun than even JC3, tbh. Of course it looks nicer and can go without crashing for 10 minutes, but there's less stealth and/or destruction than I like. I'll give the arcade a shot, it seemed like pure bloat so I wasn't going to touch it.

What makes Borderlands 1 better than 2?
I played through 2 recently but ran out of steam about 3/4 of the way through the main campaign. Whereas I haven't played Borderlands 1 since like 2010.

Trickshot Simulator, which is pure streamer bait but it was only a few bucks and seemed interesting enough. I haven't landed one single trick in about an hour of playing, but based on some vids I've seen that doesn't seem out of the ordinary. I just can't imagine playing this much if you're not a streamer or cripplingly OCD.
Also played a few boomer shooters last night, Rise of the Triad from '95 and its remake from '13. Both are good, the old one needs to be modded a bit to play right, and come to think of it the "new" one does too (like locking the FPS to 60 in your driver settings), but really the new one just controls so much better. Lotsa gibs
and dirty jokes and secret levels and other cool old school shit.
